On January 30, 2020, the WHO (World Health Organisation) broadcast international concern about the existence of a novel (new) coronavirus.

Since then, over 290,000 people have died across the world from the coronavirus secondary infection, known as COVID-19.

Not everyone who contracts coronavirus shows symptoms. Some people develop mild symptoms while some, sadly, succumb to COVID-19 and fail to recover.

The new coronavirus is known as SARS-CoV-2 and is extremely dangerous. It’s more contagious than influenza, and the respiratory tract infection is complicated to treat.

Moreover, no vaccine currently exists.

In the following short video, Canadian family physician Dr Peter Lin explains

  • how coronavirus works,
  • how the virus transmitted,
  • the relationship between the eyes, nose and mouth,
  • the difference between surgical masks and regular masks, and
  • what we can do to protect ourselves.
